Literacy instruction one of another important component of Library Management Program supported by Room to Read Nepal. This program is running in twenty schools focusing in class 1 to 3. From this program children get literacy skills to become lifelong readers and learners, one crucial input is regular access to books and other reading materials. This program helps to increase reading habits of children. To achieve the long term goal of making all children independent readers at the primary level, Room to Read/Prayas Nepal have initiated pilot programs for reading instruction and reading skills improvement in primary schools. The pilots focus on providing supplemental teaching materials/aids and teacher professional development to support existing literacy instruction in the schools. The Literacy Instruction program is one of four programs under Room to Read’s Literacy Pillar. The other three programs include development of libraries, Publication of books for young children in local languages, and support for school infrastructure.
Major changes/achievement:
- The use of supplemental teaching materials by school teachers at class room has been increased in the program implementing schools.
- The schools have been completely changed their first and second grade room set-up to make more child-friendly environment. Desks and benches have been replaced with carpets and mats. Class rooms have been decorated by various education materials. So there is a safe and joyful environment to the children so that they experience learning as a fun activity. So the retention of students in the class room is increased.
- The teaching method is completely changed. The teachers are giving more priority to student to explore their creativity. So children are enjoying in the class room.
- Reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of children is increased in the grade 1, 2 and 3.
- The learning achievement of students in Nepali language is improving a lot.
- The regularity of children at school has increased due to parent's regular school enrolment.
